Belgium: Radicalized Youth Arrested For Attempted Syria Trip... And RELEASED... Three Times

  • by: Maarten Schenk

You can't make this up: Belgian state media are reporting a radicalized youth was arrested today and a search was conducted at his house. The minor, aged 15 years, was suspected by the authorities of wanting to travel to Syria, presumably to join ISIS. He was released later in the day and his current whereabouts are unknown.

That by itself would be quite incredible given the present circumstances but this was actually the third time the kid was picked up for the same thing. This time he was released even before the search at his house was concluded according to 'sources close to the investigation'. Investigators had asked a judge to put the kid in juvenile detention but this request was turned down.

Sources are also saying that because the suspect was already arrested and released this morning he can't be re-arrested again for the same cause within 24 hours.

All of this happened within less than a week of the Paris terror attacks that left over 120 people dead and which were perpetrated by terrorists returned from Syria. Earlier today French security forces confirmed the death of the suspected ringleader behind the attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who died in an assault by special police units on an appartment in Saint-Denis yesterday.

Abaaoud also happened to be a terrorist of Belgian descent who traveled to Syria before returning to Europe to plan attacks there.

Absurdism clearly isn't dead yet in Belgium.
